June 2026

Greetings,

June is the time we are finishing the planting of our spring vegetable gardens and beginning to see perennial plants bloom.

Only a year has gone by since planting my food forest and already my front yard is beginning to pop.  Normally this isn’t something we see in food forests until the third year. I think repositioning mature sage plants throughout the yard, plus the investment in large filbert trees was well worth the energy and investment that gives my young design a more mature appearance.

As I teach about permaculture, I constantly emphasize the principles in just about every presentation that I do.  As I work in my yard, I’m doing the same thing reflecting on the list.  One of the principles, Apply Self Regulation and Accept Feedback, is definitely bittersweet, most of the feedback is positive, but I’m a bit concerned that I planted too much oregano as a pest deterrent, pollinator attractant, and ground cover.  As I look at the chives doing the same job yet not taking over the yard, I’m reflecting on using chives more in my designs.  Through Observing and Interacting, I’m able to constantly learn about what’s best for my design, and also my clients.  Fortunately, I was able to cut back and harvest the oregano for tea and seasoning. As it’s drying in my basement with lemon balm and mint, I feel a little better about the abundant planting. Obtaining a Yield is an important permaculture principle being true even for my herb teas.

The principles are a symbiotic process that constantly evolve over time and so is my yard.  For more examples and explanations go to the Permacultureprinciples.com website. Last, I invite you to schedule a consultation with me at my All Things Regenerative website.  I recommend online during the winter season; but truly my favorite option is to visit you, face-to-face.
